Estádio Bruno José Daniel

In 2005, the Estádio Bruno José Daniel hosted Copa Libertadores group matches, a rare honour for a municipal ground in the São Paulo suburbs — it came because Esporte Clube Santo André had won the Copa do Brasil the year before, and continental football followed the trophy to Vila América rather than the other way round.

The ground opened in two stages, in November and December 1969, as the Estádio Municipal de Santo André, and was renamed in 1973 for Bruno José Daniel, a former mayor and municipal councillor who had died in the year the stadium first opened. Locally it is known as Brunão.

Between April and August 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the stands and concourses were turned into a field hospital rather than a football venue. The pitch itself has since moved on from grass too: a 2021 rebuild replaced the turf with a synthetic surface and added floodlighting and new dressing rooms.

The record crowd goes back further, to 11 September 1983, when some 21,000 packed in for a goalless draw between Santo André and Corinthians — nominally just a league fixture, but in fact the farewell match for Corinthians full-back Zé Maria.
