The naming history at Matozinhos says more about Athletic-MG's finances than the ground itself: opened as Estádio Joaquim Portugal, run for years as Arena Unimed, and since 2023 badged Arena Sicredi — three names for one stadium, each tied to whichever sponsor was covering the bills. Athletic Club plays out of a district on the edge of São João del-Rei rather than a landmark square, which keeps the ground modest in scale next to the bigger arenas of the Minas Gerais league.

The reconstruction of 2024–2025 changed more than the numbers on the card. Capacity went from 2,303 to 6,324, and the old terracing gave way to a single rebuilt stand fitted with individual seats — the kind of upgrade that turns a neighbourhood ground into something closer to a proper home venue. The pitch itself was relaid in Bermuda Celebration, a grass variety chosen for how it holds up under heavy use rather than for looks.

No record survives of when the stadium first opened its gates, which is not unusual for grounds built to serve a single local club rather than to host anything grander. What the reconstruction did settle is the stadium's current shape: one main stand, natural turf, and a capacity that puts it among the smaller venues in the state rather than a stage built for state or national finals.
