Estádio Orlando Scarpelli
Florianópolis, Brazil
Orlando Scarpelli was a club president and benefactor who gave the land the stadium stands on, and Figueirense Futebol Clube has never sold the name on: no sponsor has been attached to it, and the only alternative anyone uses is the affectionate Scarpellão.
The building sits in Estreito, and it belongs to the club outright.
Its biggest nights are older than its present configuration. In 1975 a Brazilian championship match against Vasco da Gama drew 32,800, which remains the attendance record for the whole state of Santa Catarina. Twenty-five years later, on 12 August 2000, Brazil played Chile here in a friendly before a crowd of a little over 31,000, and that stands as the stadium's own record.
Between the football, the pitch has taken the weight of touring shows: Eric Clapton on the Journeyman World Tour in October 1990, Xuxa in December 1991, Shakira on the Pies Descalzos tour in December 1996, and The Black Eyed Peas in November 2010. The natural grass is replaced periodically and watered by an automatic system, which is part of what makes that possible.
When the 2014 World Cup host cities were being chosen, Florianópolis was considered and then passed over.
