Sol de Mayo is Río Negro's Atlantic anchor: while the province's football weight has long sat with the clubs of General Roca and Cipolletti further up the valley, Viedma keeps its own ground on the Costanera, the avenue that runs along the Río Negro itself. Construction started in 1935, and the stadium opened in 1939.

The name Sol de Mayo belongs to the club rather than to any sponsor; the ground's alternative title, Estadio Albiceleste, is a nod to the same white-and-sky-blue kit that gives the national team its own nickname, borrowed here for a stadium seating 5,000.
