When Luis Islas walked into the dressing room in 2021, the players found themselves being coached by a World Cup winner. Islas kept goal for Argentina at the 1986 finals in Mexico, and he brought his own man for the bench, Luciano Perudini, a former Independiente player, as his assistant.
Islas was not the only name with a bigger stage behind him. Goalkeeper Julio Chiarini had lifted the Copa Libertadores with River Plate before he arrived in Viedma.
Sol de Mayo plays in Torneo Federal A, the fourth tier of Argentine football. The closest it has come to something bigger was the 2014/15 Transición, when the club reached the semi-final before Rivadavia de Lincoln ended the run. Home matches are played at Estadio Sol de Mayo, known locally as the Estadio de Avenida Costanera for the street it stands on, opened in 1939 and holding 5,000.
White and sky-blue shirts gave the club its nickname, Albiceleste, alongside the simpler Sol. Titles have come in clusters: 1927, 1930, 1931 and 1932, then a long wait to 2011 and 2018.
