«Papero»
Círculo Deportivo's only national title took a play-off and one away goal to arrive. In 2019 the club won the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur in the Pampeano-Sur region, then had to beat Boxing Club of Río Gallegos to reach Torneo Federal A. The tie finished 3-2 on aggregate, settled by a goal from Leonardo Alvarado in the 45th minute of the second half and by the rule that sent the away-goal winner up a division.
They have stayed in Federal A since, and the 2025 season has them working through the Reválida phase. Kimberley, from Mar del Plata, is the opponent they measure themselves against in that competition, a fixture both sides call a clásico. The derby closer to home belongs to Juventud Unida, the other club from Comandante Nicanor Otamendi.
The club was founded on 23 December 1921 as Círculo Sportivo, in a town that grew rich on potato farming — the origin of Papero, the nickname still used today. A government decree changed the name to Círculo Deportivo in 1948. It plays in red and green, Rojiverde, and its senior side competes in the Liga Marplatense de Fútbol, based in neighbouring Mar del Plata rather than in its own smaller town.
Círculo Deportivo reached the Torneo Nacional twice as Liga Marplatense champions, in 1977 and 1985; the second trip produced a win over San Lorenzo at El Gasómetro. Four decades earlier, from 1941 to 1948, the club had won the General Alvarado league title eight years running.
