About
The Torneo Federal A sits at the third tier of the Argentine football pyramid, operating under the authority of the Consejo Federal within the Argentine Football Association. It serves a distinct geographical and administrative purpose compared to its Buenos Aires counterpart, the Primera B Metropolitana. While both occupy the same echelon, the division is defined by affiliation rather than purely by level. The Primera B caters to clubs with direct links to the capital, whereas the Federal A accommodates those from the interior provinces, excluding the metropolitan zone.
Established in 2014 to replace the Torneo Argentino A, the competition aims to streamline the pathway for indirect affiliate clubs. The structure is geographically driven to reduce travel burdens. Teams are divided into four zones—A, B, C, and D—for the initial regular season. Progression depends on performance within these zones. The top sides from each region advance to the Championship Stages, which utilize a knockout format to decide the inaugural promotion spot to the Primera Nacional. Meanwhile, other contenders enter the Revalida stage, a multi-phase ordeal to secure the second available promotion place.
Relegation routes teams down to the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur, the fourth tier. Since its inception, the league has undergone several structural adjustments regarding group sizes and promotion rules. The competitive landscape has been relatively wide, with eleven different clubs claiming the title since the rebranding. The most recent champions, Ciudad de Bolívar, secured victory in 2025, marking their first triumph in the competition's history. No team has managed to retain the crown or win it multiple times.
