Santiago del Estero province splits its footballing loyalty by geography, and in La Banda that loyalty has belonged almost entirely to one shirt. Sarmiento is known around the city as El Profesor. It has taken the Liga Santiagueña title 25 times. The first came in 1932, the most recent in 2018.
The team plays in blue and white stripes at the Estadio Ciudad de La Banda, which holds 8,000. Provincial dominance was only ever half the story. In 2010, Sarmiento won the Torneo del Interior and stepped up into Torneo Argentino B. It took until the 2023/24 season for the next leap: a 3-0 win over Altos Hornos Zapla in the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur final sent the club into Torneo Federal A.
The name most connected to Sarmiento beyond Santiago del Estero belongs to Exequiel Zeballos, who came through the club as a boy before Boca Juniors signed him into their academy at 11. He has since won the league and the Copa Argentina with Boca, and collected South American youth titles with Argentina's national team.
Federal A brought Sarmiento to a final in 2024. Central Norte held them to 0-0 after 90 minutes, and the trip to Primera Nacional came down to the shootout. Central Norte won it 4-3 on penalties, and that defeat is now what defines Sarmiento's rivalry with them.
