Nine years into its life, the club changed its name to mark someone else's death. It began in 1941 in the Chacra 25 district of Formosa and took the neighbourhood's name for itself, playing as Club Chacra 25 until 17 August 1950 — the centenary of the death of General José de San Martín — when the members renamed it Club Sportivo General San Martín.
The shirt earned the club its nickname before any trophy did: white, with a single blue stripe down the front, blue shorts and socks underneath. Formosans call the team La Franja for it. Home matches are played at Estadio 17 de Octubre, which holds 2,000.
Most of what San Martín has won belongs to the province. It has taken the Liga Formoseña de Fútbol title 12 times, from 1968 through to 2018. Nationally it climbed further: winning the Torneo del Interior in the 2010–11 season pushed it up into Torneo Federal A, and it added the Torneo Federal C, a fifth-tier competition, in 2015. It has stayed in Federal A since 2019 without adding a title there.
Derby day in Formosa means Sportivo Patria, a fixture known locally as the Clásico Formoseño; games against Sol de América in national competition get called a clásico too. Diego Osvaldo Velázquez remains the club's leading scorer with 39 goals across all competitions, while Alejandro Julián Benítez, who also captained the side, holds the appearance record at more than 292 matches. Martín Martos took over as head coach in 2025, after Sergio Arias left the post the same year.
