In Río Cuarto, a football club took the name of Athens. Founded as Club Sportivo Atenas, it folded a library into its own structure by 1922 and changed its name to mark it: Club Sportivo y Biblioteca Atenas.

The founding fell on 9 July 1916, and the home ground built a few years later carries the same date in its name: Estadio 9 de Julio. It opened on 1 January 1923 and holds 7,000. When Copa Argentina fixtures have clashed with AFA's ground requirements, Atenas has had to play its home leg elsewhere, but 9 de Julio remains the club's own.

The shirt is white, worn plain white since the 1960s. It gave the club its nickname, Los Albos.

The first came in 1920, the most recent in 2021. Beyond the region, progress has come in stages. The 2007 Torneo del Interior title lifted the club into Torneo Argentino B for the first time, a place it held until relegation back to the regional leagues in 2012/13. Titles in Torneo Federal C, in 2016 and 2017, rebuilt the climb. The 2022/23 Torneo Regional Federal Amateur crown put Atenas back into Torneo Federal A, where it plays now.

The club is still what it was made to be in 1922: a sports society and a library, under one name, in Río Cuarto.
