Alvarado traces itself to one such corner: a group of friends who met at the Puente Alvarado bar, at San Juan and Alvarado streets, and turned that habit into a club on 21 June 1928, with Francisco Rojo as its first president.

The defining season came in 1978, the club's fiftieth year, when Alvarado reached the Campeonato Nacional, the country's top flight — and marked the occasion by beating San Lorenzo 5-0. Eduberto Artero managed that side. Decades later, in 2019, Mauricio Giganti took the club into the Primera B Nacional, winning the promotion playoff final against San Jorge de Tucumán after the opponents walked off the pitch amid controversy. That run upward did not hold: in 2025, under Marcelo Vázquez, Alvarado finished bottom of Zone A in the Primera B Nacional and dropped to the Torneo Federal A.

Locally, the club has been champion of the Liga Marplatense five times, and the fixture that matters most in Mar del Plata is not against a rival from Buenos Aires but against Aldosivi — the Clásico marplatense, contested at a stadium both clubs share. That ground is the Estadio José María Minella, holding 35,354, where Alvarado plays in blue at home and white away.
