Tomás Santillán agreed to take the job only after the man first elected to lead the club, Jesús Domínguez, said he did not have the time. That handover, in a house on Calle Güemes 443 in the western part of Santiago del Estero, is where Club Atlético Güemes started, on 12 October 1932.
They play in blue with a red band across the chest, Azulgranas, alongside the more common Gaucho. Home matches are at Estadio Arturo "Jiya" Miranda, known locally as La Isla, on Avenida Rivadavia. Club Atlético Mitre is across the city, and the meetings between the two are called the Clásico Santiagueño.
Within the province, Güemes has rarely gone long without a title — 25 regional championships by 2020, including a year, 2011, when it won the Anual, Apertura and Clausura in the same season. Moving beyond the province took longer. A regional zone win in 1985/86 opened the door to the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores, and the following year Güemes reached a Torneo del Interior final, losing to San Martín de Tucumán.
The breakthrough came decades later. Winning the Torneo del Interior in 2014 sent the club up into Federal B, and from there it kept climbing: promotion again in 2015 after beating San Martín de Formosa in the Tercer Ascenso final, then a fourth promotion in 2019 following victory over Achirense in the Torneo Regional Amateur.
In the Copa Argentina, the run has stopped short each time — the furthest Güemes has gone is the round of 64, in 2021/22, without a trophy from the competition.
