The two clubs sit on opposite ends of the western stretch of Greater Buenos Aires, and since a first meeting on 8 December 1962 the derby has carried its own name, Clásico del Oeste.

Midland grew out of the railway that gave it its name — the Midland Railway line that once served Libertad, west of the capital, and the club that formed around it on 28 June 1914. A split in 1929 pulled it into two competing entities, one in red and white, one holding the original yellow and black; the two rejoined in 1933, and the reunion is what fixed the white shirt with its diagonal blue band that Midland still wears.

Los Funebreros — the undertakers — comes from the ground's neighbour.

Between February 1988 and September 1989, Midland put together a run that still stands as a South American record: 36 consecutive victories, opening with a 3-1 win over Fénix and folding into a 50-match unbeaten sequence before Sarmiento de Junín ended it 1-0. Titles have come in the lower divisions — Primera D in 2001, Primera C in 2016-17 — and in 2025 the club reached Primera Nacional for the first time. Agustín Orión, the former Boca Juniors and Argentina goalkeeper, never played for Midland but supports the club and took over as its president that same year.

Matches are still played at the Estadio Ciudad de la Libertad, a ground built for 6,000 that keeps Midland's football tied to the district it grew from.
