A brief run in the top division had come earlier too, in 1966, through the Torneo Reducido play-off rather than a title outright.

The club took shape in the basement of a bar called La Mezquita, in the Balvanera district, where Spanish immigrants and their children met in 1956 to found a place that would keep them tied to Spain. The nickname that stuck, Los Gallegos, points to where most of the founders actually came from — Galicia, not the rest of Spain.

Two goalkeepers frame the club's football history more than any trophy does. Pedro Catalano, who kept goal from 1976 to 1994, went without conceding for a run of matches that still stands as an Argentine record.

Home games are played at Estadio Nueva España, in Parque Avellaneda, holding up to 36,000. The fixture with the sharpest edge is against Sportivo Italiano, known as the Clásico de las colectividades — Spanish roots against Italian ones, first contested in 1963 and renewed more than fifty times since.
