Barracas is the port district south of the Buenos Aires centre, laid out around the old tanneries and rail yards that once fed the Riachuelo docks. Sportivo Barracas grew out of that instinct, though it began as a rowing initiative before the founders, meeting at the Cavour hall on 30 October 1913, redirected it toward football. A merger that same year with Club Riachuelo brought the new club a pitch on Iriarte and Santa Elena and a place already registered with the association.

The early rise was fast: División Intermedia champions in 1916, promoted straight into the top flight, and Argentine champions in 1932 — the club's only Primera División title. Three years earlier, in 1929, Barracas had toured Spain, Italy and Portugal, playing Barcelona, Juventus, Milan and Lazio along the way.

The 1931 split between professional and amateur football pushed Barracas into the amateur ranks, and by 1937 the club had drifted out of the AFA structure altogether, its old ground demolished that same year. Three decades passed before it returned, in 1967, and then only into the bottom division. A 2003 relocation to Bolívar under the name Barracas Bolívar took place in red and blue rather than its own colours; a 2010 move to San Isidro followed to play at Acassuso's ground; expulsion from the AFA after relegation in 2012 was reversed the following year. The 2015 Primera D title, which sent the club back up to Primera C, also brought back the original name and the blue-and-white kit.

There is still no ground of its own. Home matches are played at the Estadio Tres de Febrero, on loan from Club Almagro, and the closest thing to a fixed rival is Barracas Central, from the same district, in a meeting known locally as the Clásico Barraqueño.
