The club grew out of a French railway company's workforce, formed on 18 November 1915 as Club Compañía General de Buenos Aires. Home has always been the ground now known as Estadio José María Moraños, a compact 1,500-capacity venue on Los Nogales in La Tablada.

Their best season came early: a Copa de Competencia Intermedia title in 1926. The 1987/88 championship in Primera D sent the club up to Primera C for the first time, but the stay didn't last — by 1994/95 Lugano had been desafiliado, thrown out of the association entirely. They clawed back through Primera D, won the Torneo Reducido in 1997/98 to earn a second promotion, and again couldn't hold their ground, dropping back down after the 1998/99 campaign.

The orange kit and the black away shirt with its diagonal orange band have stayed constant through all of it, which is more than can be said for the club's level.
