Chacarita Juniors

Villa Crespo runs into Chacarita at the edges, and it is there that Club Atlético Chacarita Juniors was founded on 1 May 1906. The club has never moved its headquarters from that ground, even though its home pitch sits some distance away, in Villa Maipú, at the Estadio de Chacarita Juniors.

The colours came loaded with meaning from the start: red for the founders' politics, white for their declared good intentions, black for the cemetery of La Chacarita nearby, which also earned the club a second, darker nickname alongside the more common Tricolor. The years after 1913 tested that founding energy — the side effectively stopped functioning before a reorganisation in 1919 brought it back. It reached the top flight in 1924, still in the amateur era, and carried on after Argentine football turned professional in 1931.

One season sits above the rest. In the 1969 Metropolitano, Chacarita were crowned champions of Argentina, beating River Plate 4-1 in the final — a result recognised by the AFA as a full national title. Two years later the club came within one match of continental silverware, losing the Joan Gamper Trophy final to Barcelona 0-1. Nothing since has matched that run; the closest domestic cup effort ended in the 1969 quarter-finals, eliminated by Boca Juniors on goal difference after a draw.

Ignacio Piatti made his professional start here in 2004 before building a career that carried him into the Argentina national side, one of the names supporters point to when the conversation turns to what the club has sent out into the wider game.

None of that history runs as deep as the one with Atlanta. The two clubs share Villa Crespo, and their fixture, known as the Clásico de Villa Crespo, has been played more than 130 times since 1927 — a neighbourhood argument renewed every time the sides meet. Nueva Chicago provides the more modern edge, a derby the press simply calls the classic of Mataderos, while Tigre remains a rivalry of lesser weight, present but never quite central.
