CA Estudiantes

Their one recognised trophy from the amateur era, the Copa de Competencia Jockey Club, dates to 1910, and it took the Argentine Football Association until 2013 to put an official stamp on it. By then Estudiantes had spent decades moving between the lower divisions, taking Primera C five times — the first as early as 1903, the last in 2000 — and Primera B twice, in 1906 and again in 1977.

The club traces back further than that solitary top-flight prize. It was founded on 15 August 1898 in Buenos Aires, put together by a group of young Argentines alongside three English immigrants, Hansen, McHardy and FitzSimons, and named at first for the Colegio Nacional the founders attended. The Club Atlético Estudiantes name followed in 1899. In 1928 it absorbed another side, Sportivo Devoto.

Caseros only became home in 1959, when the club was granted land there; the Estadio Ciudad de Caseros, now holding 16,740 across all-seated stands, opened in 1963. Black shirts at home, white away, remain the constant. Against Almagro, based a short distance away in José Ingenieros within the same Tres de Febrero district, the fixture is known locally as the Clásico de Tres de Febrero.

Estudiantes is a name that trips people up — there is another club by it in La Plata, red and white stripes, a different stadium entirely, and yet another Estudiantes altogether in Olavarría, known for basketball rather than football. This one is the Caseros side, and among those who have worn its colours, the men who chased down that 1910 cup carry more weight in the club's own telling — a title the AFA itself took over a century to acknowledge as real.
