Arquitecto Ricardo Etcheverri sits in Caballito, the ground Ferro Carril Oeste has called home since 1905, when founder David Simpson put up the money to build it. Ticket lists and databases still disagree on how many it holds — the club's own site says 17,000, Transfermarkt and the stadium's own records say 24,442.

The club grew out of the workshops of the Buenos Aires Western Railway, founded on 28 July 1904 by employees of the line that Argentines still call the Sarmiento. It played its early seasons as Club Atlético del Ferrocarril Oeste de Buenos Aires and only broke from the railway company and took its current name at the end of the 1930s.

Carlos Griguol took over as coach and, playing in the top flight, won the Torneo Nacional twice — unbeaten in 1982, then past River Plate home and away in the 1984 final. Before that, in the amateur era, the forward line known as Los Cinco Mosqueteros carried the attack through the late 1930s, and Herminio Masantonio's 256 goals still stand as the club's scoring record.

Vélez Sársfield is the rival, and the fixture is known locally as the Clásico del Oeste — two clubs from the west side of the city with no love lost between them. There is little glamour in the club's more recent history: a double relegation in 2001 dropped Ferro to the third tier, and it took until 2003 to climb back to the second division, where it has mostly stayed since, promoted out of Primera B Nacional as recently as 2015.

Under president Santiago Leyden, who ran the club from 1964 to 1993, membership reached 50,000.
