Quilmes dates its own history from 27 November 1887, when a group of British residents in the town south of Buenos Aires formed the Quilmes and Polo Club, soon renamed Quilmes Rovers Athletic Club. Historians who have gone through the archives tell a different story: that early club dissolved, and the institution playing today grew out of a reorganisation on 5 November 1897, when Reverend Joseph Stevenson gathered what remained of the British community into a new Quilmes Cricket Club. The name changed again in 1901, in 1945, and finally in 1952, when Quilmes Atlético Club became official.
The white shirt with a blue collar, worn with blue shorts, replaced an earlier red and blue in 1912.
The season fans still talk about is 1978, when Quilmes won the Torneo Metropolitano, its only top-flight title of the professional era. Bernabé Palacios kept goal and captained that side; up front, Luis Andreuchi finished the Argentine championship as top scorer with 21 goals, level with Diego Maradona. Lower down the pyramid, Quilmes has done the same job repeatedly: four Primera B titles between 1949 and 1975, one of them awarded after a scandal involving Newell's Old Boys, followed by promotions through Primera B Metropolitana and Nacional B in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The old derby against Argentino de Quilmes, first played in 1906, has not been renewed at senior level since 1981, leaving the sharper rivalries with Lanús and Banfield, the other clubs of the southern conurbation. Home games are still played at the Estadio Centenario Ciudad de Quilmes, which holds 30,500 in the town that gave the club both its name and its brewery.
