Gimnasia Jujuy

San Salvador de Jujuy sits in Argentina's northwest, closer to the Bolivian border than to Buenos Aires, and Gimnasia y Esgrima has spent most of its life as the city's answer to a footballing landscape dominated from the capital. The club took shape on 18 March 1931, when its founding members settled a detail that still defines it: the shirt would carry a light blue stripe on white, a decision made at that first meeting and never revisited.

Two Segunda División titles mark the high points of the record — one in the 1993/94 season, the other in the Clausura of 2004/2005 — each of them a promotion earned rather than a trophy for its own sake, given how rarely the club has settled into Argentina's top flight for long. When it has got there, fourth place has been as high as it climbed, in the 1975 Nacional, the 1998 Clausura and the 2006 Clausura, three campaigns that put the club within sight of a title race without ever pulling it in.

The Copa Argentina has offered more recent frustration than reward. In 2025-26 Gimnasia reached the round of 16 before losing to River Plate on penalties after a goalless draw. A year earlier the run went further on nerve alone: past Córdoba on penalties, 5-4 after a 2-2 draw, before Belgrano ended it the same way, 4-2 in the shootout after another 2-2. Neither run added a trophy, but both showed a club still capable of taking a big name to the wire.

Home games are played at the Estadio 23 de Agosto, known locally as La Tacita de Plata — the little silver cup — a ground that went through renovation ahead of the 2011 Copa América and now holds crowds in the low tens of thousands. On a matchday there, light blue and white are still the only colours that matter.
