The **Primera D Metropolitana** operated as the fifth tier of Argentine football within the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino structure. Founded in 1950, the competition began its existence as the "Tercera de Ascenso." A structural shift in 1986 moved the league down one level, placing it below the newly created Primera B Nacional. For decades, it served as the lowest rung of the metropolitan pyramid.
Its primary distinction was its amateur status. While other tiers in the Buenos Aires area professionalized long before, the Primera D remained a strictly amateur league. This made it the specific entry point for non-professional clubs seeking to enter the official AFA system. The competition featured a format where teams played in two single round-robin tournaments known as the Apertura and Clausura. The winners of these two phases met in a final playoff. The victor of this playoff secured the sole promotion spot to the Primera B Metropolitana.
Over its history, several clubs dominated the title race. Argentino (Merlo), Ferrocarril Midland, Liniers, and Sacachispas each won the championship three times. In its final standalone season in 2023, Centro Español claimed the last title before the league ceased to exist as a separate entity.
The tournament was dissolved in 2023 and merged with the Primera C Metropolitana. This consolidation created a unified fourth-division tournament for the 2024 season. The new structure included 24 teams competing in the same Apertura and Clausura format. Real Pilar emerged as the champion of this inaugural unified edition. The merger effectively removed the fifth tier from the AFA hierarchy. The bottom-placed team in the new format faced potential disaffiliation, although administrative changes later annulled some relegations. The function of hosting amateur clubs shifted to the expanded Primera C and a new initiative called the Torneo Promocional Amateur.
