About
Founded in 2020, the Copa de la Liga Profesional served a specific purpose for Argentine football during a period of global disruption. Created by the Liga Profesional de Fútbol in collaboration with the Argentine Football Association, the tournament filled the calendar while the sport faced a pandemic. Although officially classified as a cup competition, its winner received recognition as the national champion for that specific year. This distinction set it apart from other domestic fixtures, as it operated under the league rather than the national association directly.
All clubs from the Argentine Primera División participated in the event. In its final edition in 2024, 28 teams competed, divided into two groups of 14. The format involved a group stage featuring single round-robin matches within zones plus interzonal fixtures, followed by a knockout phase for the top four teams from each group. The winner of the competition qualified for the Copa Libertadores, while the Copa Argentina winner faced a different path to continental qualification.
Boca Juniors stands as the most successful club, having won the tournament twice in 2020 and 2022. Other winners include Colón in 2021, Rosario Central in 2023, and Estudiantes (LP) in 2024. The competition was discontinued after the 2024 season and replaced in 2025 by two separate tournaments, Apertura and Clausura, within the Liga Profesional structure. Unlike the traditional national cup open to all divisions, this league-run event focused exclusively on the top tier, determining the primary title holder for several years before its conclusion.
