The green and white on Defensores de Vilelas' shirts came from the stands, not a boardroom: a supporter named Carlos Winter proposed the colours after watching Banfield play, and the choice held long enough to give the club its nickname, El Verde de Vilelas. The club took shape in Vilelas, a town on the Paraná in Chaco province close to Resistencia, in 1952, and still plays its home matches at the 700-seat Estadio Vilelas.

Promotion has come in fits and starts. In 2017, Defensores finished sixth in zone B of Torneo Federal B, outside the play-off places, yet moved up anyway when the league expanded and rewarded the season on sporting merit. Regional titles followed: the Torneo Federativo in 2022, then both halves of the 2024 Liga Chaqueña season, the Apertura and the Oficial. The clearest statement came in 2025-26, when Defensores won the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur, beating Juventud Unida of Gualeguaychú on penalties, 7-6, after the final finished 1-1. The win sends the club into Torneo Federal A for the 2026 season, Argentina's third tier.

Locally, none of it carries the weight of the fixture against Don Orione. The two sides meet in what is known as El Clásico Portuario, a name that traces back to the river and the port trade both towns grew up around on the edge of Resistencia.
