Estadio Tecnológico de Oaxaca
Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca built its stadium on the grounds of the Instituto Tecnológico de Oaxaca, replacing the old Estadio Benito Juárez. Work began in 2013, and the ground opened on 27 March 2016. Empresas ICA and Casaflex carried out the construction, which cost between 332 and 336 million pesos.
Four months after the opening, the governor handed the lease to the San Román family's Grupo Tecomachalco for twenty years, tying the venue's fortunes to the club they own, Alebrijes de Oaxaca. The design left room to grow: plans allowed for expansion to 25,000 seats if Alebrijes reached Mexico's top flight, a scenario that never arrived, so the stadium has stayed at its original 17,200.
Locals rarely use the official name. Around the Tecnológico campus it is known instead as the Estadio ITO, or, with a nod to the mythical creatures Oaxaca is famous for, the Templo Alebrije.
