Happy Valley Recreation Ground
The land under the pitch was flattened for a racecourse in 1845. The Hong Kong Football Club has been based here since 1886, longer than any structure now standing on the site: the stadium of 1954 came down in 1995 and the present one went up in its place the same year.
The ground most people mean when they say Happy Valley Recreation Ground is the public complex run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department; the football is played at the Hong Kong Football Club Stadium inside it, known to almost everyone as The Jungle .
The surface changed in 2004, when the natural grass was taken up and synthetic turf laid in its place.
The stands hold 2,750, and the recorded home attendance record is 1,720, set on 26 February 2023 for a Hong Kong Premier League match against Kitchee. The South China Athletic Association and a number of rugby clubs also use the site.
