Loimaan Liikuntahalli

Ilkka areena is printed across the fascia, but the building itself carries no commercial name – just the simple words that describe its function.

There is a main stand with a covered roof, and behind it, the forest rises up against the sky. The trees are tall pines, dense and green, and on some days the wind comes straight through them across the open side of the stadium. The stands themselves are concrete steps with metal railings, and the seating is a mix of benches and plastic chairs. The away end sits on a separate block of wooden benches, slightly lower than the main terrace. Advertising boards line the pitch edge, showing local sponsors – supermarkets, construction firms, garages – and a scoreboard hangs from a single mast in the distance.

It does not look like a place built for spectacle. There are no floodlights towering above it, no luxury boxes looking down on the game. The scale is small enough that a player can hear the crowd, and the crowd can see the individual expressions on the players' faces. The surface changes depending on what is being played: the baseball diamond is laid out on top of the football pitch when the game calls for it. The track remains, a permanent red border around everything.

The stadium sits between the town and the woods. On a Saturday afternoon when the local team plays, the car parks fill up early, and the walk to the gate passes through quiet residential streets. The match itself is straightforward. The ball moves across the synthetic surface, faster than it would on grass. When a corner is taken, the players do not slide; they plant their feet and wait for the cross. The away end never stopped. The home side sat deep and soaked it up. It is a working ground, nothing more, nothing less.
