Cove Rangers beat Peterhead 3-0 in the fourth round of League One's regular season on Saturday. The match finished with goals from J. Teasdale, J. White and E. Oppong, and it was enough to move the hosts off the bottom of the table. To be fair, the result came after a run of poor form that had seen them lose three of their last five games.
And here's the thing — the first real moment came forty-eight minutes in when Teasdale found the net. Before that, the game had been held together by yellow cards. Mercer picked one up at twenty-seven minutes, and Pawlett followed at the break. The visitors were creating space without taking advantage of it.
By then, Peterhead had made changes. Pawlett came off at sixty minutes, and Davies-Browne replaced someone at sixty-seven. The hosts kept their shape and waited. White equalled the scorer at eighty-three, and Oppong added a third at eighty-seven. Kerr and McAllister both went into the book at eighty-five and eighty-six, and Barry came on for the visitors at eighty-six minutes.
The numbers tell a story about control. Cove Rangers had sixty per cent possession against forty for Peterhead, but both sides registered similar attacks — ninety-six to ninety. The difference was in the finishing. Cove hit four shots on target with fifty-seven per cent accuracy, while Peterhead managed three on target at forty-three per cent. Three goalkeeper saves for the hosts, one for the visitors.
Eight points now separate the two sides in the table. Peterhead sit seventh with seven points from six games, while Cove move up to eighth with five points. The visitors had won two of their last five, including a 2-1 victory over East Fife on August fifteenth. The hosts had lost three in a row before this, including a 3-0 defeat by East Kilbride on the same date last week.
