Omonia claw back at GSP in dramatic draw
Olympiacos Piraeus and Omonia shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw at the GSP Stadium on Saturday evening. The First Division regular season third round fixture ended with both sides level after a back-and-forth contest that swung from end to end. It was a result that kept Olympiacos rooted to the bottom of the table while allowing Omonia to maintain their grip on fourth place.
By then, the visitors had already found their rhythm. S. Ambri opened the scoring in the 30th minute, catching the home side off-guard. P. Kynigopoulos levelled just before the break with a well-taken effort in the 45+4th minute, and the crowd roared them on as the teams went into the interval level. Omonia took the lead in the 55th minute when Ambri struck again, and here's the thing — they weren't just surviving, they were dictating tempo.
Olympiacos responded with urgency. P. Zachariou got the hosts level in the 60th minute, and S. Ambri — a different player, playing for the home side — restored parity in the 55th minute. Then came the moment that defined the evening: P. Kynigopoulos for Omonia got over the line in the 90+4th minute, and the visitors had everything to celebrate. One mistake ends it, and Olympiacos paid for it late.
The statistics told a familiar story. Olympiacos held 64 per cent possession and launched 90 attacks, but Omonia were sharper with eight shots to 14. Seven shots on target for the hosts produced two goals; four on target for the visitors yielded three. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging, but here the visitors were more efficient when it mattered.
Olympiacos remain winless after three games, sitting 10th with just three points from three draws. Omonia, meanwhile, sit fourth with five points — a win, two draws, and no defeats. The gap between them is small, and this draw means neither side has gained much ground on the other.
What struck me watching this was how both teams changed shape at the break. Olympiacos brought on two players in quick succession at the interval, and Omonia responded with three substitutions in the 59th minute. The game opened up after that, and both sides had the deeper squad to make those changes stick. By then, it was already too late for either to take all three points.
