About the player
When Diego Valdés arrived at Vélez Sarsfield in June 2025, it was an unusual way to start a move that had cost Vélez around $3 million and committed the midfielder to a contract running to the end of 2027.
Valdés had built his career gradually before that. He came through the Audax Italiano academy in Santiago and made his senior debut there in 2014, going on to make 63 league appearances before Monarcas Morelia took him to Mexico in 2016. He was named Liga MX's Best Offensive Midfielder in 2023 and was twice voted Chile's Footballer of the Year, in 2017 and again in 2023.
He has also worn the Chile shirt at two Copa América tournaments, in 2019 and 2024, with the team reaching fourth place in the first of those. Since joining Vélez, he has made 23 league appearances and scored once.
