Maseru's football has long run through its institutions rather than its neighbourhoods: the police field a side, and so does the army, whose club, Lesotho Defence Force FC, was formed in 1982 as Lesotho Paramilitary Forces FC before the barracks renamed it twice more, first Royal Lesotho Defence Force, then simply LDF. Locals call it Sohle Sohle.

That military identity shapes the club's sharpest rivalry: matches against Lesotho Mounted Police Service FC carry the weight of army against police, a fixture where the table goes out of the window. Games with Matlama FC have long settled who actually contends for the title, and for two decades LDF usually did. Ten Lesotho Premier League championships came between 1983 and 2004, with four Lesotho Cups worked in among them, the last of those in 2000.

Malefetsane Pheko, a defender and midfielder capped twelve times for Lesotho, is remembered as the kind of player a team is built around rather than simply fielded. Home games are played at Ratjomose Stadium, a ground that holds barely a thousand on an ordinary matchday.

None of the ten league titles has arrived since 2004, and the 2023/24 season found LDF stuck near the bottom of the table, docked points for disciplinary trouble rather than beaten on the pitch.
