About

The Czech Handball Extraliga stands as the premier men's professional handball competition within the Czech Republic. Administered by the Czech Handball Federation, the league operates at the highest level of the national domestic structure. It was established in 1993, emerging after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia to replace the joint league that had existed since 1950.

The competition is currently sponsored as the Chance Extraliga and comprises twelve teams. A regular season, known as the Základní část, sees every club face each other twice over twenty-two rounds. This phase determines the subsequent split. The top eight sides advance to a play-off system designed to crown the national champion. Meanwhile, the bottom four clubs enter a relegation round, or play-out, to decide which team drops to the second division, the 1. liga mužů. Promotion from the second tier is generally awarded to the winner of that division.

Historical success belongs largely to HCB Karviná, who have claimed fourteen titles since the league's inception, including a period of dominance in the 2000s. HC Dukla Praha holds four titles, building on a legacy that includes twenty-eight Czechoslovak championships. The current champions are HCB Karviná, securing the title in the 2024–2025 season.

The league has undergone various naming conventions due to sponsorship deals, previously operating as the Zubr Extraliga, Tipgames Extraliga, and STRABAG Rail Extraliga. Unlike the Czech Handball Cup, which utilizes a knockout format, the Extraliga determines its winner through cumulative points over a full season.
