About

The Liga Națională (Women's Handball) operates as the premier professional handball competition in Romania, organizing the sport at Level 1 of the national pyramid. Established in its current seven-a-side format in 1958, the league sits above Divizia A and is administered by the Romanian Handball Federation (FRH).

The structure relies on a double round-robin regular season involving between 12 and 14 teams. Unlike many international counterparts, the competition features no championship playoffs; the team accumulating the most points during the regular campaign is crowned champion. The format also dictates specific relegation rules. The bottom two teams drop directly to Divizia A, while those finishing in 11th and 12th place in larger 14-team seasons may enter a relegation playoff.

A key distinction lies in European qualification. The league title grants direct entry to the EHF Champions League. This differs from the Cupa României, a knockout tournament, where the winner typically qualifies for the EHF European League unless already secured via the league standings. The competition is also branded as Liga Florilor, reflecting its sponsorship history.

Success within the league is dominated by a single institution. SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, including its predecessor Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea, holds the record with 20 titles. The current reigning champion is CSM București, which has won the competition eight times. The league remains distinct from the men's Liga Națională, known as Liga Zimbrilor, particularly regarding team names and specific European qualification paths, though both serve as the top-tier domestic competitions in their respective genders.
