Liga Nationala (Romania) 2026/27

Liga Națională stands as the premier professional men’s handball competition in Romania. Organized by the Romanian Handball Federation (FRH), it occupies Level 1 of the national pyramid, sitting directly above Divizia A. The tournament traces its lineage back to 1933, when matches were contested with 11 players per side. The modern seven-a-side format was introduced in 1958, and the current title was adopted in 1997–98, succeeding earlier iterations known as Divizia A and Categoria A.

The league operates on a structure designed to balance competition and survival. A regular season sees all participating teams face each other twice, once at home and once away. Following this phase, the top eight clubs advance to playoffs, which are frequently split into groups before culminating in a best-of-three final series. The lower-ranked teams enter playouts to determine who avoids dropping down to the second tier. Relegation is not automatic; instead, it is decided through a knockout baraj tournament involving three teams in a round-robin format.

CS Dinamo București holds the status of reigning champion for the 2025–26 season. Historically, CSA Steaua București leads the all-time list with 28 titles, followed by Dinamo with 22. The competition serves as the primary route for European qualification, granting the winner entry into the EHF Champions League. While distinct from the Cupa României and the Supercupa României, it remains the central stage for domestic handball. Commercial sponsorship has also seen the league referred to as Liga Zimbrilor.
