«The Tigresses»
Bucharest's council did not have a women's handball flagship in 2007, so the General Council set one up itself, and within a decade the club it built carried the city's blue and yellow into the biggest finals in the sport. The Tigresses, as they are known after the tiger worked into their crest, reached the top of European handball in 2015–16 under Kim Rasmussen, who took them to the EHF Champions League title and a domestic treble in the same season.
Cristina Neagu became the face of that era, joining in 2017 and staying through 2025; her number eight has since been retired. Isabelle Gulldén, the top scorer and Finals MVP of that 2016 Champions League run, gave the title its individual signature, even as the team around her kept turning over — Rasmussen followed by Jakob Vestergaard, Per Johansson, Helle Thomsen, Carlos Viver, and now Bojana Popović.
Since that breakthrough season, the league title has barely left Bucharest: eight Liga Națională crowns between 2015 and 2025, with the Romanian Cup and Supercup following in most of the same years. The closest the Tigresses have come to matching 2016 in Europe was a run of third-place finishes, most recently reaching the semi-finals stage again in 2025–26.
None of this plays out at a single home ground. European nights belong to the Polyvalent Hall, which holds 5,300, while domestic fixtures move between smaller halls around the city, including the one Rapid București calls home — fitting, given that games against Rapid carry the name "Derby-ul României la handbal feminin", the country's biggest fixture in the women's game, with Dinamo București and Râmnicu Vâlcea supplying the rest of the rivalry. It is a club still run, at its core, on the municipal idea that put it on the court in 2007.
