About

The Intersport Cup is an annual international invitational women's handball tournament held in Norway. Organised by the Norwegian Handball Federation, the event functions primarily as a preparation platform for the Norwegian national team ahead of major championships like the European or World Championships. Unlike domestic league structures, this is a high-prestige friendly competition that does not form part of a promotion or relegation pyramid.

First staged in 2001 under the name Møbelringen Cup, the competition has undergone several rebrandings due to sponsorship changes. It became the Intersport Cup in 2019 and was renamed the Posten Cup in 2023 following a deal with the Norwegian postal service. The format involves four teams playing a single round-robin group where each side faces the others once. There are no knockout stages or finals; the winner is determined by the final standings based on accumulated points, goal difference, and goals scored.

Norway stands as the most successful nation in the tournament's history, having claimed the title twelve times as of 2021, with further victories recorded in 2023 and 2024. Other notable winners include Russia, who took the inaugural edition, alongside Denmark, France, and the Netherlands. The competition draws participants from various countries, including Brazil, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway for the current season.

The event is distinct from the Nordic Handball Championship, a defunct biennial regional competition that only involved Nordic nations. In contrast, the Intersport/Posten Cup is an annual event that features non-Nordic teams. There is no direct male equivalent tournament of the same name and history in Norway for the men's national team.
