Close to ten thousand people filled Bislett Stadium in Oslo on 29 September 1946, Crown Prince Harald among them, to watch Norway's women play their first international match. Sweden won 5–2 that night.

The team, known at home as Håndballjentene , has never settled on one ground. Matches move between Oslo Spektrum, Trondheim Spektrum and the 15,000-seat Telenor Arena outside the capital.

The breakthrough came in Beijing in 2008, when Norway beat Russia 34–27 to win its first Olympic title, and the same squad returned four years later to beat Montenegro for a second gold. Goalkeeper Katrine Lunde was part of both wins and still in goal when Norway took silver behind France in Paris in 2024, closing out a run that had also brought bronze in 2016 and 2020. Between 1998 and 2024, Norway added ten European titles and five world championships.
