Denmark reached an Olympic final for the third tournament running in Sydney in 2000 and did not lose it, matching the gold from Atlanta four years earlier and setting up a third in Athens in 2004 — no team, men's or women's, has won three straight Olympic titles before or since. That side, coached by Ulrik Wilbek and known as the Iron Ladies, settled the 2004 final against South Korea only after a 29-29 draw through overtime and a penalty shoot-out, with Henriette Rønde Mikkelsen scoring the winning kick.

Anja Andersen carried that team's scoring load and was named the world's best player in 1997, the year Denmark also took the world title in the country's own championship. Camilla Andersen, named the world's best player the year before her, remains the side's leading scorer with 846 goals from 194 appearances.

The run of finals has continued without matching that peak: silver at the last two European Championships, in 2022 and 2024, both lost to Norway, and bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Denmark have no fixed home ground, moving between arenas such as Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning and Royal Arena in Copenhagen depending on the fixture. The federation formed the team in 1956, and it took a year to reach a first major tournament, the 1957 World Championship in Sweden, where it finished fifth.
