Cristina Neagu has been named IHF World Player of the Year four times and stands as the leading scorer in the history of the EHF European Championship. She plays for a side that Mariana Tîrcă holds the appearance and goalscoring records for, and one that Ana Starck-Stănișel helped crown world champions in 1962, the only time Romania has taken the indoor title outright.

That single gold sits between two silvers, in 1973 and 2005, and a bronze in 2015 under the Swedish coach Tomas Ryde. What sets Romania apart from most nations in women's handball is not any one of those results but the run behind them: since the World Championship began, Romania is the only team never to have missed an edition. Before the indoor game took over, the same federation's side had already won outdoor, 11-a-side world titles in 1956 and 1960, and it later added the Field Handball World Cup in 2009 and 2010.

Continental success has come harder. The bronze at the 2010 European Championship remains the team's only podium finish at that tournament, and Denmark, Norway and Hungary have long been the sides Romania measures itself against in that competition. The Olympics have proven harder still: a fourth-place finish in 1976 is as close as the team has come to a medal, and none has followed since.

Lorena Ostase captains the current squad under head coach Ovidiu Mihăilă. Romania will play as co-hosts at the 2026 European Championship, in front of crowds at the Sala Polivalentă that the team knows well but an Olympic medal it has still never brought home.
