Hungary's women had already won a world title before the national team as such existed: at the first Women's Field Handball World Championship, held in Budapest in 1949, they took gold. The side that would carry the name into international competition only came together three years later, playing its first match against Romania on 12 June 1952.

The biggest of its trophies came in 1965, when Hungary beat Yugoslavia 5-3 in the World Championship final. Silver followed in 1957, 1982, 1995 and 2003, bronze in 1971, 1975, 1978 and 2005.

At the European Championship, Hungary won the title in 2000 and has added bronze four times since, most recently in 2024. The same year, 2000, brought an Olympic silver in Sydney; Montreal 1976, the team's Olympic debut, and Atlanta 1996 both ended in bronze.

Romania remains the fixture that sports journalism reaches for the word derby. Katrin Klujber , the squad's record scorer with 581 goals in 110 caps, was named to the All-Star team as right back at the 2024 Paris Olympics, for which Hungary qualified by hosting the qualification tournament in Debrecen in April 2023. Vladimir Golovin has coached the side since 2021, the year the team also moved its home matches from the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena to the newly opened MVM Dome.
