Extraliga (Slovakia) 2026/27

The Slovak Handball Extraliga stands as the premier men’s handball competition in Slovakia, governed by the Slovak Handball Federation. Established in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the league began with the 1993–94 campaign. Before this inaugural season, Slovak clubs participated in the unified Czechoslovak Handball League. A brief period existed between 1993 and 1998 known as the Czech-Slovak Interliga, which temporarily replaced the domestic structure. Since the 2005–06 season, the Slovak league has operated independently from its Czech counterpart.

HT Tatran Prešov dominates the competition’s history. The club has secured the championship title 20 times, including victories in 2004, 2005, and a streak from 2007 through 2019. Additional wins occurred in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. In the most recent final of the 2025–26 season, Tatran Prešov defeated HK Bojnice to claim the title. Other significant participants include MŠK Považská Bystrica with four titles and HK Košice, who won twice under the name VSŽ Košice in 1997 and 1999.

The league features ten clubs competing in a format split into a regular season and a postseason. During the regular ten-team round-robin, the top six teams advance to the Championship Play-offs. The bottom four teams contest a placement group for positions 7th through 10th. The Championship group plays another round-robin, with the top four advancing to semi-finals. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are decided via best-of-3 or best-of-5 series, while the final is a best-of-5 match.

Promotion and relegation connect the Extraliga with the 1. Liga, where the last-placed team is relegated and the 1. Liga winner is promoted. Administrative licensing may influence these movements. The competition has undergone sponsorship changes, formerly known as the Slovnaft Handball Extraliga. Since the 2020/21 season, it has been called the Niké Handball Extraliga.
