The SEHA Liga (South East Handball Association League) operates as a transnational regional club competition, distinct from domestic leagues. Founded in 2011 by the national federations of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Slovakia, the tournament was designed to provide high-level cross-border matches for clubs in Southeast Europe.
The league structure typically involves a double round-robin regular season followed by a Final Four knockout tournament. While the SEHA Liga is not part of the national pyramid's promotion and relegation system, clubs qualify for European competitions based on their domestic league performance, with SEHA results contributing to national coefficients. The competition was originally sponsored by Gazprom, becoming the SEHA-Gazprom League.
In 2022, following EHF sanctions on Russian and Belarusian clubs, the league split. The 'West' division, comprising Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Hungary, and Slovakia, ceased unified operations after the 2022-23 season was abandoned. The 'East' division, featuring clubs like HC Meshkov Brest, HC Zenit, and HC Chekhovskie Medvedi, continued independently. For the 2024-25 season, the West Division was inactive.
Most successful clubs in the league's history from 2011 to 2023 are RK Vardar 1961 and Telekom Veszprém, each with five titles. The most recent champion of the unified/active structure, the East Division, for the 2024-25 season was HC Zenit. The league differs from neighboring competitions by being a regional super-league rather than a national one, offering clubs from smaller nations a platform to compete against stronger regional rivals.
