Kungälv edge past Irsta in Allsvenskan thriller
Västerås Irsta HK and IFK Kungälv shared the spoils in a 34:35 victory for the visitors in the Allsvenskan on Saturday. To be fair, the result was never in doubt for long — Kungälv grabbed momentum after a tight opening period and held their nerve through the closing stages. By then, Irsta had already thrown everything forward, but the away side kept knocking on the door until the final whistle.
We had backed the home side at 72 per cent confidence, but the match went another way. What broke it was Kungälv's second-half shift in shape — they tightened things up defensively and punished Irsta's open approach. The hosts refused to go away, but you can only chase for so long when the opposition is one step ahead tactically.
The result leaves Irsta in 12th place with a single point from their opening fixture, while Kungälv sit fourth after two games. It is early, but the gap in experience is showing — Kungälv have already won one and lost one, whereas Irsta's only game ended level.
The scoring rate tells its own story: five of Irsta's last six matches have produced 60 or more combined goals. Kungälv's recent record mirrors that, with their draw against Tumba and win over Hudinge both featuring heavy scoring. This was no different — ends were traded, and the extra goal made the difference.
Irsta now face a second match where they will need to find a way to control tempo. Kungälv, meanwhile, have one foot in controlling their own destiny — three points from two games puts them in a position to build on. The season is young, but patterns are already emerging.
