About the player
Jakov Filipović came through the youth ranks at NK Osijek before turning professional in Croatia's lower divisions with BSK Bijelo Brdo. His move to HNK Cibalia paid off quickly: the club won the Croatian Second Football League in the 2015/16 season with the defender in the side. A spell at NK Inter Zaprešić followed before he left Croatia altogether, joining Belgian club KSC Lokeren in 2017 — the same year he was called up to the Croatia national team, making his debut in a 1–1 friendly draw against Chile. He added two more caps, against China and Mexico.
The most striking chapter of his career came in 2020, when he signed for Belarusian side FK BATE Borisov on a free transfer, waiving €40,000 in unpaid wages to get the move done. It proved worthwhile: he won the Belarusian Cup in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, added the Belarusian Super Cup in 2022, and was named BATE Borisov's Player of the Year in 2021.
Filipović left BATE in 2023 for Waasland-Beveren, where he stayed until 2025 before signing for HNK Gorica.
