Mees Jacobus Wilhelmus de Wit

Mees de Wit's route to AZ Alkmaar ran through Ajax's academy, where he arrived at eight years old and worked his way up until his debut for Jong Ajax in 2017. His departure from Ajax was overshadowed by a legal dispute involving his former agent and guardian, Stefano van Delden, who was accused of threatening club directors and stalking them between 2017 and 2019. De Wit himself was not charged, but the episode left him caught in the middle of the affair, and it played a part in his exit from the club.

From there his career took him abroad: a free transfer to Sporting CP in 2018, a loan spell at Orihuela CF in Spain's Segunda División B in 2020 that yielded only a single appearance, and a return to the Netherlands with PEC Zwolle in 2021. AZ came calling in April 2022, paying a fee reported at between €2.3 million and €3 million, a deal notable because AZ won out over interest from FC Twente and Feyenoord. De Wit signed a five-year contract, later extended to run until the summer of 2029.

He has not featured for the senior side.
