The AFAS Stadion sits in Alkmaar with room for 19,478 people.

The club that plays there traces back to a merger. In May 1967, Alkmaar '54 joined with the professional wing of the Kooger Football Club, a Zaanstreek side founded in 1910, and the combined outfit took the name AZ '67 — Alkmaar Zaanstreek '67. The '67 stayed attached until 1986, when the club shortened itself to simply AZ. Locally it goes by De Kaasboeren, the cheese farmers, a nod to Alkmaar's standing as a centre of Dutch cheese production.

Two Eredivisie titles carry the club's history, in 1980–81 and 2008–09.

Amsterdam supplies the rivalry that matters most: matches against Ajax are known as the Noord-Hollandse derby, and there's a smaller, more local needle with Alkmaarse Football Club '34.

Kees Kist remains the name most attached to the club's best years. He scored 212 goals in an AZ shirt, and in 1979 became the first Dutchman to win the European Golden Boot, on 34 goals in a single season.
