Claypole

Not many teams from the fifth division can say a chant went up in their name against Newell's Old Boys, but Claypole managed it in the 2023/2024 Copa Argentina, beating them 1-0 and becoming the first lower-division club to get past the round of thirty-two. It followed defeats in the competition against bigger names — Boca Juniors put them out 2-1 in the 2020/2021 edition, Belgrano did the same 1-0 in 2023 — so the win over Newell's read less like an upset out of nowhere than a club that had been knocking on that door for a while.

The club was founded on 1 October 1923 in what was then open countryside around Claypole, now part of Almirante Brown. It grew out of that rural setting on its own terms, not from a merger with anyone else, and has carried the nickname El Tambero ever since.

Its honours belong to the bottom tier of Argentine football rather than the top: two Primera D titles, in 1996/1997 and in the Transición 2020. The 1997 side went through the Clausura unbeaten before beating Comunicaciones in the final. Getting out of Primera C itself has proved harder — Claypole has gone up to it three times, in 1986, 1997 and 2021, and come back down each time without winning it.

Home games are played in black and white vertical stripes at the Rodolfo Vicente Capocasa ground, when it was still known as César Luis Menotti. A newer stand, named for the city itself, roughly doubled what the old ground could hold — modest by any standard above the fifth division.
