CS Cartaginés

A Canadian immigrant, Willie Pierre, gathered a handful of Costa Ricans of British descent in Cartago. Out of that meeting, on 1 July 1906, came Cartaginés, playing at first in red and blue.

The name did not stay fixed either: between 1914 and 1921 the club played as Americano. By 1925 it had come apart altogether, its players drifting to other sides, and it took until 1934 for Cartaginés to start again, from the third division. It won that division in 1935, then the second in 1936, and returned to the top flight the same year.

Its ground, Estadio José Rafael Fello Meza Ivankovich, holds 13,500 and carries the name of the man who finished as the league's top scorer in 1940.

A fourth did not arrive for 82 years, not until the 2022 Clausura. In between, the closest the club came to continental recognition was in 1994, when it beat Mexico's Atlante 3–2 in the final to take the CONCACAF Champions' Cup.
