Derry City

Derry sits on the River Foyle, playing its football across the border, in the Republic's league system. That arrangement did not come easily. Derry City formed in 1928 and spent its early decades in the Irish League, taking the title in the 1964–65 season, before a 13-year exile from senior football altogether. When the club returned in 1985, it was to the League of Ireland rather than the competition across town, a switch that still marks the club out as an outlier in Irish football.

The Brandywell has carried the club through all of it, now named the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. For years it held little more than 5,000 people; a new North Stand opened in April 2025 and pushed capacity to 6,300.

Derry play in the red-and-white hoops that give them their nickname, the Candystripes, and the shirt has stayed close to whatever else has changed around it.

The fixture that still gets marked on the calendar before any other is against Finn Harps.
