Hapoel Acre

Football arrived in Acre through the workers' movement that gave the club its name, and by 1946 the port town had its own Hapoel side pulling on shirts once dyed red, an early nickname now remembered mostly as a footnote since Hapoel Tel Aviv took ownership of "The Red Devils" for itself. Acre's own progress was slower and came from below: promotion out of Liga Bet in 1962–63, then a first climb into the top flight in 1975–76. The following season the club reached an Israel State Cup semi-final, still its high point in the competition, before relegation dropped it out of Liga Leumit for 31 years.

Those decades in the lower divisions ended with a 2008–09 runners-up finish that sent Hapoel Acre back to the Premier League, and two years later came the club's best league placing, eighth. A stadium move accompanied that rise: the old Napoleon Stadium on Napoleon's Hill was demolished, and after spells groundsharing in Nazareth Illit and Ilut, the club settled in 2011 into the Acre Municipal Stadium. The one trophy in the cabinet came in 2005–06, when Hapoel Acre beat Hapoel Be'er Sheva on penalties to win the Toto Cup, a season that also produced a 4–0 State Cup win over Maccabi Tel Aviv. On derby day the fixture that matters locally is against Maccabi Acre, not the bigger Tel Aviv sides.

Since that peak the club has bounced between tiers, dropping in 2015–16, returning in 2017–18, and going straight back down after a single season. It now plays in Liga Leumit, at a ground that holds 5,000.
